Deloreon Burton has participated in GEAR UP Kentucky for four years.He attended Winburn Middle School in Lexington, KY, and is currently ajunior at Lawrence Dunbar High School in Lexington.
In a recent news conference, Deloreon was introduced by GovernorErnie Fletcher, who asked him to talk about GEAR UP! Parts ofDeloreon's speech to the governor, news crews and university officialsfollow:
Before I begin, I would like to start out with explaining what GEAR UPstands for. GEAR UP is an acronym for Gaining Early Awareness andReadiness for Undergraduate Programs. This is a great acronym for theexcellent program GEAR UP is.
During the three GEAR UP summer camps I have attended, two atEastern Kentucky University and the previous one at CampbellsvilleUniversity, I have acquired much information that will help me on myroad to college.
At the first GEAR UP camp, we stayed in a dorm for one week. Duringthis week, we attended daily sessions about achieving higher educationand about college life. Some of the sessions were Mathematics,Science, Study Skills, Organization and Time Management.
The second year at GEAR UP summer camp, we were able to movefreely to our different classes on the EKU campus. In our Introduction toCollege class, we learned how to register for classes, how to read a col-lege course catalog, college preparation tests like the SAT and the ACT,
and about different colleges across the state of Kentucky and in theUnited States.
The most recent GEAR UP summer camp focused on the ACT. The cours-es were English, Math, Study Skills, Video Productions, Computers,Resume Writing, Outdoor Games and Writing Workshop.
