Rotary seeks exchange applicants
Rotary International District
5930 is seeking applicants forthe 1999-2000 Group StudyExchange to Finland.
Tentative dates of the
exchange are from May 7, 2000through June 7, 2000.
The Group Study Exchange is
a unique program that started in1965. It has provided inspiringvocational, educational and cul-tural experiences to thousandsof professional men andwomen. In addition, it hasserved as a tool to promotegoodwill and understanding toan international and world com-
munity.
There are four goals and
objectives for the Group StudyExchange. First, it will provideteam members an opportunityto observe their vocations aspracticed in another country.
Second, it will provide the
team members with culturalexperiences as they study peo-ple and institutions.
Third, it will provide opportuni-
ties to encourage ten membersand hosts to communicate andlive with each other in the spiritof fellowship and good will.
And fourth, it will offer
Rotarians a practical way ofmentoring young professional inthe formative stages of theircareers.
Laredoans who have previ-
ously been on group studyexchange include Cecilia Garzaand Nancy Blair to Canada;Nick Van Steenberg to NewZealand, Ed and CarolSherwood to the Philippines;Yvonne S. Gutierrez and ErinYeary to Argentina; LindaMitchell and Jane Collins toBrazil and Henry Garcia, MariaElena Estrada and JoseSanchez to western Australia.
Applicants between the ages
of 25 40 and who have beenin their present job assignmentfor the past two years mayapply.
The Group Study Exchange is
an intense and rigorous pro-gram that will entail flexibility onthe part of the team members.

Galveston mermaid sculpture spawns debate
GALVESTON, Texas (AP)
Mermaids, who according tolegend once tricked lonelysailors into jumping into thesea, are now used for luringtourist dollars.
But a sculpture of two topless
mermaids under constructionon the side of the FlagshipHotel has city leaders divinginto a debate about the appro-priateness of the 50-foot tallreproductions.
Sergio Piñeda, who designed
the exterior, said he did notintend the busty mermaids to
be offensive.
My mermaids are depicted in
a traditional mode, naked andfull-breasted the way anadventurous but bewilderedsailor would envision them, hesaid.
Discussion of the artwork
raised eyebrows during aGalveston City Council work-shop on Thursday.
The council recently has con-
sidered banning female top-lessness in public, after com-plaints at events such as MardiGras. But no one thought to
