PRILIA HAS TO
be one of the great
success stories in the Italian indus-try for the past 20 years, and has
been successful in competition, cleaning upon just about every sector they have entered,but now they are looking very seriously atthe off-road market. The first step had to bea dedicated engine unit, and that is exactlywhat Ivano Beggio, boss of Aprilia, has justannounced, and it is a beauty.
In recent times, the new high-tech four-
stroke singles have frequently met and over-come the two-stroke brigadeproving thatthey have what it takes in both enduro andmotocross, and certainly in the high profiledesert events like the Dakar.
Currently, most of the competition is
closely-matched on power, so Aprilia haslooked further into the future and decidedthat a small V-twin will be the answer, andenable them to turn the tables on the oppo-sition. Small it certainly is, with overalldimensions actually less than some of itsexisting single-cylinder rivals.
Starting from a scratch, the Aprilia
R&D engineers have opted for a 77�V-twin to achieve maximum power,compact dimensions and light weight,and it seems that this has beenachieved. Capacity is 450cc (bore andstroke not revealed) with four tita-nium valves per cylinder operated bySOHC and driven by a Hy-Vo typesilent chain. Electronic fuel injectionis also employed and a powerful rareearth magnet alternator providesample power for Aprilias total elec-tronic engine management, ensur-ing low noise levels and at the sametime very low emissions, plus allow-ing battery charging and lighting cir-cuits plus an electric starter.
