What is Opal petrol? Opal petrol is a hydrocarbon fuel for use in spark ignition engines. It has very low levels of
compounds such as benzene, toluene and xylene (typically less than 5% volume). These
compounds are believed to be associated with the narcotic effects from sniffing petrol. The principal components in Opal are pure hydrocarbons such as octane. Opal petrol has a
characteristic sweet smell readily identified as petrol and is distinct from the more pungent smell
of regular unleaded. Opal also has very low levels of sulphur, less than 10ppm and meets the
highest standard for petrol for modern vehicles.
Evolution of Opal In the 1980s it was found that petrol sniffing did not occur where the only fuel sold as petrol was aviation gasoline. This is because aviation gasoline has very low levels of benzene, toluene and
xylene (typically less than 5% volume). Aviation gasoline was also sold for road use as Racing
100, used in race cars, bikes and high performance outboards. In time, aviation gasoline became
community gasoline or Comgas. However, Comgas contained lead and with lead having been
phased out from regular petrol in 1986 and all petrol from 1999 it was apparent that the Comgas
also
had to change. Comgas was reformulated to remove the lead. It is this unleaded form that is now Opal.
Testing of Opal During its development and before it was assigned the name Opal, the petrol was independently
tested as follows:-
Testing in cars Avgas has a long history of use in its Racing 100 and Comgas forms in cars, bikes and boats.
Opal was tested to examine its fuel economy, impact on emissions and drivability.
Fuel economy in cars Cars tested TOYOTA AVALON 3.0 L Auto Odometer 13,000 km
